Chapter editor

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

You write your text in the chapter editor; Illumentis saves automatically and shows the save status.

What is it for?

The chapter editor opens from the chapter list of a book. The writing surface with a toolbar sits in the middle, and the side panels with navigator, worldbuilding and context are to the left and right. A status indicator tells you whether your text is being saved right now.

Illumentis saves your changes automatically after a short pause, and “Save now” forces a save immediately. If you work offline, Illumentis keeps a local copy and syncs later. The header shows the word count and the estimated reading time.

You start new scenes with scene dividers and mention characters and locations with “@”. For writing there are aids such as Zen mode, typewriter mode, writing sprint, read aloud and split screen. All aids are hints or rule-based; you write the text yourself.

How it works

  1. Open a chapter in the chapter list.

What you see afterwards: The editor opens with the writing surface.

  2. Write and format with the toolbar.

What you see afterwards: The status changes from “Not saved yet” through “Saving…” to “Saved”.

  3. Insert a new scene with “Scene divider”, or mention a character or location with “@”.

What you see afterwards: The scene appears in the side panel, and the mention is linked.

  4. If you like, choose “Zen mode”, “Typewriter”, or the “Writing sprint” in the “Writing aids” menu.

What you see afterwards: The interface adapts, or the sprint timer starts.

  5. Choose “← Book” to return to the book page.

What you see afterwards: The book page opens.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with write access to the chapter edit the text. If someone has claimed the chapter, Illumentis can either only warn or block writing, depending on the project setting. Guests only see a chapter if it has been shared with them.

Your data

The chapter text belongs to the project and is backed up and exported with it. Every save creates a version in the version history. Changes saved offline stay in the browser until the connection is back.

Limits

Links are only allowed with “http://” or “https://”. The editor offers bold, italic, strikethrough, headings 1 to 3, links, lists and block quotes. If the chapter has changed in the meantime, Illumentis offers a conflict dialog instead of overwriting silently. Browser extensions with access to text fields can read along.

Frequently asked questions

How do I leave Zen mode?

With Esc or with Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+F. Zen mode hides the interface, only the text remains.

What does “Offline – saved locally” show?

Your changes are stored locally in the browser and synced as soon as the connection is back. If the chapter has been changed elsewhere in the meantime, a conflict dialog opens.

What is the micro milestone for?

If you turn it on in the accessibility settings, the editor shows milestones in small word steps and reports “Milestone reached!”.

Can I read another chapter next to my text?

Yes, with “Split screen”. A chapter for reference appears on the right, without leaving the editor.
