Factions and organizations

Under “Factions” you manage groups, their members and their relationships to each other, each with a time entry.

What is it for?

Guilds, royal houses, secret societies: many stories live on groups. In Illumentis you create them as factions. A faction has culture notes and a power structure, members with a role, and relationships to other factions. You also see the artifacts it owns there.

Memberships and relationships carry a time entry saying since when they exist. When a membership ends, you end it with a point in time. It then stays visible as ended, and you can later trace who was part of it when and how alliances and conflicts developed.

Factions are a module. In a new project it is switched off at first, unless you chose it when creating the project. You switch it on in the project settings under “Modules”.

How it works

  1. In the project settings, under “Modules”, switch on the “Factions” module.

What you see afterwards: The “Factions” section is available in the project.

  2. In the “Factions” section, choose “New faction” and enter a name.

What you see afterwards: The detail page of the faction opens.

  3. Under “Basics”, enter culture notes and power structure and choose “Save”.

What you see afterwards: The basic data is saved.

  4. Under “Members”, add a character with a role and the point in time “Since when does this membership exist?”.

What you see afterwards: The member appears in the list.

  5. Under “Relationships to other factions”, create a relationship, or open the “Network view” for the “Faction relationship network”.

What you see afterwards: The graph shows all relationships between the factions.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with rights create factions, edit them, move them to the trash and restore them. They maintain memberships and relationships with their own rights. Guests only see culture notes and power structure if you share them.

Your data

Factions belong to the project and are backed up and exported with it. The name is visible to guests. A faction in the trash is kept for 30 days.

Limits

If the “Factions” module is not switched on, Illumentis answers with a notice that the module is disabled. The name and type of a relationship have at most 255 characters; culture notes, power structure and descriptions at most 10,000. Faction A and faction B must be different. There is no quantity limit for factions on the Free plan.

Frequently asked questions

How do I end a membership?

Choose “End” on the member, enter the point in time under “When did this membership end?” and confirm. The membership stays visible as “Ended (world time …)”. “Remove”, by contrast, deletes it outright.

What is the difference between “End” and “Remove”?

“End” records that the membership or relationship existed until a point in time. “Remove” deletes the entry as if it had not existed.
