Editor layout and context bar

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

The editor has three zones: tool panel on the left, writing surface in the middle, context panel on the right.

What is it for?

The editor layout consists of three zones. On the left is the tool panel with its tool bar, in the middle the writing surface, and on the right the context panel. This way you keep characters, locations and notes in view without leaving the text.

In the tool bar you switch between navigator, worldbuilding, references and settings. The navigator shows the chapters of the book with their scenes, the worldbuilding panel looks up entries, references shows your research entries, and the settings contain rarely used chapter actions. Items can be pinned.

The context panel on the right follows the scene your cursor is in. You adjust the width of the zones at the handles, and you can save the layout as your default.

How it works

  1. In the tool bar on the left, choose a tool: “Navigator”, “World building”, “References” or “Settings”.

What you see afterwards: The panel shows the chosen tool.

  2. Hide or show the panel with Ctrl/Cmd+B, and the context panel with “Show/hide context panel” or Ctrl/Cmd+\.

What you see afterwards: The respective zone disappears or appears.

  3. Drag the handles between the zones to adjust the width.

What you see afterwards: The zones have the new width.

  4. In the “Workspace & layout menu”, choose “Save current layout as default”.

What you see afterwards: “Layout saved”

Who can do this?

The layout is available to everyone who opens a chapter in the editor. What the panels show depends on your permissions in the project.

Your data

The saved layout lives only in your browser and applies per device. Pinned items stay within easy reach in the editor.

Limits

The “Sources” tool appears only with a matching Studio and currently shows only “Coming in a later build-out step.” The shortcuts Ctrl/Cmd+1 to 5 are fixed: navigator, worldbuilding, sources, references, settings. On small screens the zones are more compact.
