When sign-in is locked

Available Free Last reviewed: 19 Oct 2026

Here you find out why your sign-in can be blocked and how you get access again.

What is it for?

Illumentis protects your account from guessing attempts. After several wrong passwords, sign-in slows down for a while. You may know this from a cash machine that pauses after wrong entries.

During the brake, the page reports too many failed sign-in attempts. As a rule, it tells you after how many minutes you can try again. Even the correct password works only after this waiting time.

Sometimes the cause is not the password but the state of your account. You see a message about it only after you have entered the correct credentials. With a wrong password, the page shows the same message “Invalid credentials.”, regardless of the state of the account. Possible messages are “Account not yet activated - please use the invitation link.”, “Account suspended.”, “Account locked for security reasons - please contact support.” or “Account permanently banned.”.

This page shows you which message means what and which path gets you further.

How it works

  1. Read the message at the password field on the sign-in page.

What you see afterwards: You know whether the brake applies or your account is blocked.

  2. If the brake applies, wait for the stated time and then log in again.

What you see afterwards: With the correct password you get back in.

  3. If you no longer know your password, click “Forgot password?” and choose “Request link”.

What you see afterwards: “Enter your email address. If an account exists for it, you’ll receive a reset link.”

  4. If it says “Account not yet activated - please use the invitation link.”, open your invitation and click “Activate account”.

What you see afterwards: You are redirected to the sign-in page and log in with the new password.

  5. If you have lost both your password and your two-factor device, choose “Lost both your password and two-factor device?” and follow the recovery.

What you see afterwards: With a recovery key, the page confirms the recovery; without a key, you submit a request via “Recovery key gone too? Contact an admin”.

Who can do this?

The brake after failed attempts applies automatically to all accounts. Only admins with user management trigger suspensions and freezes, and suspensions also happen as part of moderation. A freeze can happen at your request, for example if you suspect someone else has access.

Your data

A failed attempt is counted only as a timestamp for an anonymous statistic, with no link to you, your IP address or your device. Illumentis deletes these timestamps automatically after a short time. If your account is frozen, you receive an email with the subject “Security notice: account temporarily locked - Illumentis”.

Limits

Resetting the password does not lift a suspension by admins or moderation. You reach the support center only after signing in, through the header. The two-factor step has its own brake with the message “Too many failed attempts - please try again later.”.

Frequently asked questions

Why was I signed out in the middle of my work?

If your account is suspended or frozen, your session ends. The sign-in page then shows, for example, “Your account was frozen for security reasons. Please log in again for details.”.

What do I do about “Account suspended.” or “Account permanently banned.”?

Resetting the password does not lift either suspension. “Account suspended.” can be time-limited: when the period ends, Illumentis lifts the suspension itself, and you log in again. “Account permanently banned.” is not lifted automatically. Illumentis does not yet have a separate way to file an appeal for this.

Does “Forgot password?” free a frozen account?

That depends on why it was frozen. If your account was frozen because of a suspected unauthorized access, you can release it again through “Forgot password?”. If your email address is considered unsafe, you get no link through “Forgot password?”, because the mailbox then no longer counts as proof. In this case, recovery through “Lost both your password and two-factor device?” with your recovery key, or a request to an admin, helps.
