Project modules and settings

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

In the project settings you switch modules on, set the world type and control chapter claiming.

What is it for?

Not every project needs everything. That is why Illumentis offers modules that you switch on only when you need them: magic system, calendar, factions, languages, story templates, series arc and travel assistant. A new project starts with the modules switched off, unless you choose them when you create it.

If you switch a module off, its data is kept. If you open an area of a module that is switched off, a notice appears saying that it is optional and not yet activated for this project, with a link to switch it on.

In addition there are the project name, the world type, chapter claiming and the default visibility for new entries. The world type is not a literary genre: it only controls the preset for means of transport and similar items.

How it works

  1. Open the “Settings” of your project.

What you see afterwards: The page shows the project name, world type, modules and further sections.

  2. Change the title under “Project name” and choose “Save”.

    What you see afterwards: “Saved.”

  3. Under “Modules”, switch the modules you want on or off.

What you see afterwards: The change applies immediately. If an error occurs, the switch jumps back and a message appears.

  4. For “Chapter claiming”, choose between “Soft warning (editing still possible)” and “Hard write protection”.

What you see afterwards: A chapter counts as being edited as soon as someone opens the editor.

  5. Under “Default guest visibility for new world-building entries”, set what guests see for new characters, locations and factions.

What you see afterwards: The default applies to newly created entries.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with the right permissions change the project name and world type. When someone tries to switch on a module, the interface refers co-authors to the owner. Only the owner can delete the project.

Your data

All settings belong to the project and are backed up and exported with it. Switching a module off does not delete any data.

Limits

The default visibility only applies to newly created entries. “Apply to existing objects” applies it retroactively and overwrites switches that you set differently for individual entries. A project in the trash is kept for 30 days. Some modules come with quantity limits in the Free plan, for example calendars and rules. The operators set the amount; the page of the respective feature names the default.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my data if I switch a module off?

It is kept. The module hides its areas, and if you open one directly, a notice says that it is not activated.

What is chapter claiming?

Illumentis marks a chapter as “being edited right now” as soon as someone opens the editor. With the soft warning, others can still edit it; with the hard write protection, they cannot.

What does the world type do?

It selects the preset means of transport: “Real world”, “Custom fantasy/sci-fi world” or “Mixed”. It has nothing to do with a genre.
