Version history and conflict resolution

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

The version history keeps earlier versions of a chapter; a conflict dialog prevents silent overwriting.

What is it for?

The version history is a section in the context panel of the editor. It lists the saved versions of the chapter, grouped by day, with the number of saves per day. Illumentis creates a new version when the last one is older than five minutes, not on every autosave.

You first see an earlier version as a preview with its date. With “Load into editor”, it replaces the current content of the editor. This is how you get back text that you had discarded.

If the chapter has changed elsewhere in the meantime, for example through someone else or a second device, Illumentis does not overwrite anything. A conflict dialog lets you choose how to proceed. The blurb and synopsis of a book are versioned as well.

How it works

  1. In the context panel of the editor, open the “Version history” section.

What you see afterwards: The versions appear grouped by day, for example under “Today” and “Yesterday”.

  2. Choose a version and look at the preview.

What you see afterwards: The preview shows date and text without changing the editor.

  3. Choose “Load into editor”.

What you see afterwards: The content of the version replaces the text in the editor.

  4. Choose “Open full history” if you want to see the whole list.

What you see afterwards: The “Full version history” appears, grouped by day.

Who can do this?

Whoever may read a chapter sees its version history. Owners and co-authors with write access may write and resolve conflicts. New versions of blurb and synopsis are created by an account with an active Vastitas studio of the project owner; viewing is not restricted.

Your data

The versions belong to the chapter and the project and are backed up and exported with it.

Limits

Illumentis creates a version at most every five minutes. Whoever loads an earlier version replaces the editor content; the text of the last few minutes may not be in a version of its own. Illumentis does not merge texts itself: you do the reconciliation in the conflict dialog.

Frequently asked questions

Why isn’t there a new version on every save?

Illumentis creates a version only if the last one is older than five minutes. This keeps the list clear and counts sessions instead of single autosaves.

What do the three options in the conflict dialog mean?

“Fork as new chapter” saves your version as a chapter of its own with the title “… – Draft B”. “Merge manually” shows the server version alongside. “Discard my changes” takes the server version.

What happens if the chapter is in the trash by now?

The dialog asks whether you want to save your offline changes as a new, separate chapter or discard them.
