Writing assistant and writing aids

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

The writing aids check or display your text differently; they only suggest and write nothing themselves.

What is it for?

In the “Writing aids” menu of the toolbar, you switch tools on or off one by one. They are optional and rule-based. They mark passages in your text or display it differently, and you decide yourself whether to change anything.

The grammar check uses a self-hosted LanguageTool; for this, the text goes only to Illumentis’s own infrastructure. The style radar highlights filler words, monotonous sentence openings and a conspicuous number of modifiers. The audiobook lab shows sentence lengths and cadence, and the blind dialog test shuffles lines of dialogue without speakers.

In addition there are your browser’s spell check, Bionic Reading from the accessibility settings, and the Offline Validator Lite in the context panel for simple errors. You can switch each aid off again individually, and your text changes only when you step in yourself.

How it works

  1. In the toolbar, open the “Writing aids” menu.

What you see afterwards: The available aids appear as a list.

  2. Choose an aid, for example “Style radar” or “Audiobook lab”.

What you see afterwards: The text shows the highlights or the charts.

  3. Review the hints and decide yourself whether to change anything.

What you see afterwards: The text changes only if you change it.

  4. Switch the aid off again with the same menu item.

What you see afterwards: The highlights disappear.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors use the writing aids. Someone with write access to the project turns on the grammar check; guests do not have it. The Offline Validator Lite appears only when the project owner has an active Studio.

Your data

Most aids run in the browser and send nothing. For the grammar check, Illumentis sends the checked text to its own LanguageTool system. If you like, you can add a match as a glossary term.

Limits

The grammar check has to be switched on per project, checks in German or English and accepts at most 50,000 characters per request. The style radar is based on German lists. The blind dialog test recognizes dialogue by quotation marks and can miss some. The audiobook lab underlines sentences of more than 35 words in red.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the grammar check show no matches?

It is opt-in per project and has to be switched on. The checking system can also be temporarily unreachable; the editor then stays usable without an error message.

What happens to invented names in the grammar check?

Illumentis hides known names of your project from the spell check. A match that is left over can be taken over as a term or other worldbuilding entity with “Add as glossary term”.

What does the audiobook lab show?

A sentence-length heatmap and a cadence chart for read-aloud friendliness. Sentences of more than 35 words are underlined in red because they are hard to read aloud in one breath.
