Exporting a manuscript

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

You export a book in several formats in one go and check it first with the pre-flight check.

What is it for?

You reach the “Export manuscript” page through “Export & Import”. You choose a book, tick the formats and start the export. Several formats are created in one go. Finished files appear with a download link and are also listed in the export history.

You can choose .docx, PDF, EPUB 3, Normseite (.docx; the German standard manuscript page), print-ready (PDF) and the platform export for serial platforms. The typography preset and the mention export mode control the look. Title page, dedication and imprint come from the export studio.

Before the export, the pre-flight check loads and lists open points, such as open logic conflicts, foreshadowing without a resolution, empty chapters and change suggestions that are not yet decided. If there are findings, you confirm that you have seen them. The check does not block the export.

How it works

  1. Choose the book under “Book”; the pre-flight check loads automatically.

What you see afterwards: The check shows open points or “✓ No open points found”.

  2. Tick the “Format” options: .docx, PDF, EPUB 3, Normseite (.docx), Print-ready (PDF) or Platform export (Royal Road/Substack).

What you see afterwards: The chosen formats are marked.

  3. If needed, choose the “Typography preset” and the “Mention export mode”.

What you see afterwards: The options apply to this export.

  4. If there are findings, confirm “I have seen the open points and want to export anyway” and choose “Start export”.

What you see afterwards: The export is being created; for long manuscripts this takes a moment.

  5. Download the finished files with “Download”.

What you see afterwards: The files are saved.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with access to the book export. Editorial guests export the manuscript and the Normseite in their view. EPUB 3, print-ready, platform export and all typography presets except “Classic novel” require an active Vastitas studio of the owner; without a studio, a notice appears.

Your data

Every export is recorded in the export history and cleaned up after a retention period. The files contain the saved text of your book. Exporting is rate-limited.

Limits

Without Vastitas, the Normseite contains only chapter 1 as a preview. The PDF export does not yet display right-to-left scripts correctly; .docx or EPUB 3 work better for those. Print-ready is a clean intermediate step, not a replacement for professional typesetting. The footnote mention mode only works in .docx.

Frequently asked questions

Which formats are there?

.docx and PDF as standard, EPUB 3 as an e-book, Normseite (.docx) as the German publishing standard, print-ready (PDF) in a paperback trim size, and a platform export with one file per chapter for serial platforms.

Why does my Normseite contain only one chapter?

Without an active Vastitas studio, Illumentis creates the Normseite as a preview with chapter 1. With a studio, it contains the whole book.

What happens to change suggestions that I have not decided yet?

The pre-flight check points them out. The suggested text is included in the export as final text.
