Artifacts and relics

Artifacts have a status and an ownership history that shows who owned them and when.

What is it for?

A magic sword travels through history: first owned by a heroine, then in a treasury, later with a guild. You record this under “Artifacts”. Every artifact has a name, a description, a status (intact, destroyed or sealed) and, optionally, a creation time in world time.

The core is the ownership history. Every change of ownership is its own entry with a world time and, if you like, the scene in which it is told. Entries can only be added, not changed. A timeline shows you the changes at a glance.

If you mention an artifact as present in a scene, the Illuminatio Engine compares this with the documented owner at that world time and with the creation time. If the artifact shows up where it should not be, the engine reports an artifact collision.

How it works

  1. In the project, open the “Artifacts” area and choose “New artifact”.

What you see afterwards: A dialog asks for the name.

  2. Enter a name and save.

What you see afterwards: The detail view opens.

  3. Under “Basics”, add a description, the “Status” and, optionally, the “Creation time (world time)” and a linked rule. Choose “Save”.

    What you see afterwards: “Saved.”

  4. Under “Ownership history”, choose the “Owner type” and the owner, enter the time under “From which world time does this ownership apply?” and choose “Add ownership entry”.

What you see afterwards: The ownership timeline shows the new entry with “since world time …”.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with the right permissions create artifacts, edit them, move them to the trash and restore them. You can also assign artifacts on the pages of characters, locations and factions.

Your data

Artifacts and their ownership history belong to the project and are backed up and exported with it. An artifact in the trash is kept for 30 days.

Limits

By default, a project can hold at most 2 artifacts unless the project owner has a Studio subscription. The operators can change these values; Illumentis tells you the value that currently applies in the app once you reach the limit. Ownership entries cannot be changed, only added; the entry written last for a given world time applies. For factions as owners, the engine does not check for collisions.

Frequently asked questions

Can I correct an ownership entry?

No. Entries are immutable. Write a new entry for the same world time: the one written last applies.

When does the engine report an artifact collision?

When an artifact is mentioned as present in a canonical scene although its documented owner, a character or a location, is somewhere else at that world time, or when it had not been created yet. The engine does not check this for ownership by a faction.
