Writing statistics

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

The writing statistics show word count, streak, pace and forecast for a book and help with goal planning.

What is it for?

You reach the writing statistics through the tools on the book page. They show the total word count, the total reading time, your writing streak in days, the average pace of the last 14 days and a forecast date. In addition, the momentum ticker shows streak, words written today and pace across your whole account.

With a target word count and a target date, the page calculates how many words per day you would have to write from today on. The history shows the words per day, and the pacing shows the word count per scene. The reaction heatmap shows which paragraphs of a chapter beta readers have marked with emojis.

For books in the publishing mode “Serial”, two tools are added: the Patreon buffer calculator with your lead in weeks, and the cliffhanger and hook matrix, which warns when several chapters in a row end without a hook.

How it works

  1. On the book page, open “Writing statistics” under “Tools & Analysis”.

What you see afterwards: The key figures of the book appear.

  2. In the “Goal planning” area, enter “Target word count” and “Target date” and save.

What you see afterwards: “Saved.” and the page shows the daily pace you need.

  3. Look at “Daily word count” and “Pacing (word count per scene)”.

What you see afterwards: The charts show your progress. Without data, it says “No writing history yet.”

  4. In the “Reaction Heatmap”, choose a chapter.

What you see afterwards: The heatmap shows the reactions of beta readers per paragraph.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with access to the book see the statistics. Guests have no access, not even with a share.

Your data

The statistics are built from your writing sessions, which Illumentis counts when saving. Writing sprints are included. The goal belongs to the book and is backed up with the project.

Limits

“Today” applies in the time zone from your account settings; if none is saved, Illumentis calculates in UTC. Patreon buffer and hook matrix appear only for books in serial mode. The heatmap shows only reactions that beta readers have actually given. The pace is based on the last 14 days.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my streak reset at the wrong time of day?

“Today” follows the time zone saved in your account settings. If none is saved, Illumentis calculates in UTC.

When do the Patreon buffer and hook matrix appear?

Only for books with the publishing mode “Serial”. The buffer also needs a publishing plan on file; otherwise it says “No publishing plan recorded yet.”

What does the cliffhanger and hook matrix show?

It warns when an adjustable number of chapters in a row end without a cliffhanger or teaser. The basis is the chapter-end tags.
