Editing continuity flags

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

Flags are the engine’s hints; here you assess them and record your decision.

What is it for?

The flag list shows everything the Illuminatio Engine has found in your project. Each flag names the check type, the status and the objects concerned, such as characters, locations or scenes. You jump straight there, check the facts and decide.

Three assessments are available for this: “Confirm as error”, “Mark as intentional” and “Ignore”. The assessment stays with the flag and can be changed later. Team comments help when several authors decide together.

A special case is the “Possible retcon” check type. If you deliberately changed canon in a book sealed by Lore lock, you seal the retcon with a reason. If the engine lacks data for a travel time, the flag says so and offers ways out.

How it works

  1. Open “Continuity” and choose “Flags”.

What you see afterwards: The “Continuity flags” list appears. If there is nothing to do, it shows “No open flags.”

  2. Narrow down the list with “All types” and “All statuses”.

What you see afterwards: The list shows only the matching flags.

  3. Open an affected object, check the facts and choose an assessment.

What you see afterwards: The status of the flag changes, for example to “Confirmed error” or “Intentional”.

  4. If needed, write a comment under “Team comments” and choose “Add”.

What you see afterwards: Everyone involved sees the comment on the flag.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors see and assess flags. If a co-author is restricted to certain books, Illumentis hides every flag that touches even a single object outside those books. Guests do not see the flags.

Your data

Flags, their assessments and team comments belong to the project. When you seal a retcon, Illumentis records the book, the object, you as the person and your reason in a log.

Limits

The assessment “Ignored” or “Intentional” is your decision and not proof that there is no problem. “Remind me later” hides a flag from the list for 14 days. A retcon can only be sealed with a reason. Illumentis hides flags about lexicon entries while the “Languages” module is switched off.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to an assessed flag when I fix the cause?

On the next run the engine removes the flag, even if you had already assessed it. If it carries team comments, Illumentis archives it instead, and the history stays readable.

Why is “Mark as intentional” missing for a possible retcon?

There you get “Seal as a conscious retcon” instead. It requires a reason in the field “Why is this a conscious retcon, not a mistake?”.

What do I do if the engine cannot calculate a journey?

The flag shows a data gap. You can fill in the missing data, for example by also pinning a location on a connected map, hide it with “Remind me later” for 14 days, or choose “Ignore permanently”.
