Mentions (@-mentions)

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

With “@” you link characters, locations and more directly in the text, without interrupting your writing flow.

What is it for?

Type “@” in the editor and start a name. A floating menu at the cursor suggests matching entries instead of interrupting you with a dialog. You can mention characters, locations, factions, rules, languages and artifacts.

If the entry does not exist yet, you create it right from the menu and insert it. For more control, open the “Detailed mention / New…” dialog and set the kind, the entry, the form of the name and the role in the scene.

For characters, you say whether they are present in the scene or only mentioned. Presence feeds into the continuity check, for example for location collisions and travel time. Each mention stores the ID of the entry, not just the name.

How it works

  1. Type “@” in the editor and start the name, or choose “Mention” in the toolbar.

What you see afterwards: The “Mention suggestions” menu appears at the cursor.

  2. Choose an entry from the list. If there is no match, choose “Create … as a new entity”.

What you see afterwards: The mention is in the text.

  3. For more control, choose “Detailed mention / New…” and set the kind, the entry, the form of the name and the “Role in this scene”.

What you see afterwards: With “Insert”, the mention is in the text with these details.

  4. Open an existing mention with Enter or a click.

What you see afterwards: A context menu offers “Edit…”, “Create new…”, “Change alias…”, “Adjust mention…” and “Rename entity…”.

Who can do this?

Whoever may write the text sets mentions. Creating and editing entries follows your permissions in the project. In read mode, for example as a guest, the editing actions are not available.

Your data

Mentions are part of the chapter text and are backed up with it. From them, Illumentis derives the participants, rules and artifacts of a scene. It does not derive locations; you confirm those in the scene metadata.

Limits

You can mention characters, locations, factions, rules, languages and artifacts. Without a match, the menu shows “No matches.” A mention records the ID of the entry; without a valid ID, Illumentis rejects the text when saving.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between “Present / occurs here” and “Only mentioned”?

With “Present / occurs here”, the character is in the scene, and the continuity check takes that into account, for example for location collisions, travel time and gaps. “Only mentioned” means the name comes up, but the character is not there.

How do I use a different name for the same entry?

In the context menu, choose “Change alias…”. You pick an existing form of the name or create a new one. The mention then shows that name but stays linked to the entry.

Is a location counted for the scene automatically when I mention it?

No. Mentioned locations appear in the scene metadata as a suggestion, which you confirm with “This is where it happens”.
