Matrix board

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

The matrix board shows the scenes of a book as cards by chapter and along an axis you can choose.

What is it for?

The matrix board is a corkboard for the scenes of a book. The columns are the chapters in their order, and you switch the rows between three axes: POV characters, subplots and story locations. That way you see at a glance who carries the point of view when, which side plot runs where and where the scenes take place.

Each card shows the short summary of the scene, made from goal and conflict. With drag and drop you move a card to another row of the same axis and so change the assignment. No separate data is created: the board shows what is in the scene metadata and writes changes back there.

On the subplot axis and the location axis, a scene can appear in several rows at the same time. The board does not move it to another chapter.

How it works

  1. Open a book and choose the “Matrix board” under “Tools & Analysis”.

What you see afterwards: The board shows the chapters as columns.

  2. Choose the axis “POV characters”, “Subplots” or “Story locations”.

What you see afterwards: The rows change to the chosen axis.

  3. Drag a scene card to another row.

What you see afterwards: The assignment of the scene changes and the board reloads.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with access to the book see the board and change assignments. If a co-author is restricted to certain books, they only see those books. Guests have no access, even with a share, because the cards show private planning notes.

Your data

The board creates no data of its own. The POV character, subplots and locations of a scene belong to the scene and are backed up and exported with the project.

Limits

The board belongs to a single book. Rows exist only for characters, subplots and locations that are already assigned to a scene in this book. A scene cannot be dragged into another chapter. Without assignments, it shows “No scenes assigned to this axis yet.”

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I drag a scene into another chapter?

That would change the text of the chapters. The board only changes assignments such as POV character, subplots and locations, not the chapter text.

What does a card without text show?

If the scene has neither a goal nor a conflict, it shows “No goal/conflict summary”.

Why is a character or location missing as a row?

Rows appear only for entries that are assigned to at least one scene in this book. First assign a scene in the scene metadata.
