Locations and geography

Under “Locations” you manage places with a hierarchy, map pins and travel times to other locations.

What is it for?

Every story takes place somewhere. Under “Locations” you create settings: cities, forests, mountains, down to a single inn. A new location needs only a name. Illumentis marks locations that so far only have a name with “Name only — not filled in yet”, so you can find them later.

Locations can be nested: an inn belongs to a city, the city to a province, the province to a realm. The list shows this with “Part of: …”. With map pins you state where a location lies on one or more maps, and with travel times how long it takes to get from one location to another.

The Illuminatio Engine uses this information for the travel time plausibility check: does a character have enough time between two scenes to get from one location to the next? Without this information, the engine reports nothing.

How it works

  1. In the project, choose the “Locations” section and then “New location”.

What you see afterwards: A dialog asks for the name.

  2. Enter a name and save. You can add everything else later.

What you see afterwards: The detail page of the location opens.

  3. Under “Basics”, add the type, the climate, the description and, if needed, in the “Parent location” field the location it belongs to. Choose “Save”.

What you see afterwards: The list shows “Part of: …” on the subordinate location.

  4. Pin the location under “Map pins” with “Pin on another map” and a click on the map image.

What you see afterwards: The pin appears on the map.

  5. Under “Travel times”, enter the “Travel time (minutes)” for an “Other location” and choose “Add travel time”.

What you see afterwards: The travel time appears in the list as “… min”.

Who can do this?

Owners and co-authors with rights create locations, edit them, move them to the trash and restore them. They maintain pins and travel times with their own rights. Guests only see shared fields of a location. The name stays visible to guests.

Your data

Locations belong to the project and are backed up and exported with it. A location in the trash is kept for 30 days. Pins and travel times belong to the location.

Limits

By default, a project can hold at most 20 locations unless the project owner has a studio subscription. The operators can change these values; Illumentis tells you the value currently in effect in the app once you reach the limit. A map without an image cannot be pinned. A travel time lies between 1 and 2,147,483,647 minutes. The hierarchy must not form a cycle. The travel time check does not cover locations without a pin and without a travel time.

Frequently asked questions

What does “Name only — not filled in yet” mean?

This location so far only has a name. The label reminds you to fill it in. You find all such entries collected under “Incomplete entries”.

Why can’t I pin a location on a map?

The map does not have an image yet. Illumentis reports “This map doesn't have an uploaded image yet.” Upload an image first, then you can pin.

Why does the engine report nothing about travel times?

The engine only calculates with locations for which travel times or shared map pins exist. Without distance and speed information, it makes no statement.
