What is Illumentis

Available Free Last reviewed: 24 Oct 2026

Illumentis combines a writing editor, worldbuilding and rule-based continuity checking in one web app.

What is it for?

Illumentis is a web app for planning, developing and writing novels. It is aimed mainly at authors of fantasy and science fiction and suits stories set in the real world just as well. You write in an editor and, alongside it, maintain characters, locations, factions, rules and other building blocks of your world as structured entries.

The Illuminatio Engine checks your manuscript for contradictions according to fixed, traceable rules. It points out irregularities, and you decide what to do with them. Every book project has its own data area, content from one project does not flow into another, and Illumentis runs with European providers, not with US hyperscalers.

The foundation is free: Illumentis Emersio. If you want to create more entries or use Pro features, you choose a studio subscription such as Illumentis Vastitas. You work on a project together with co-authors, let beta readers read along through shares, and at the end you export your manuscript.

How it works

  1. Create an account and confirm the beta notices.

What you see afterwards: You land in onboarding and then on your shelf.

  2. On the shelf, create a project, for example for a novel or a series.

What you see afterwards: The project appears on the shelf; inside it, you work with books, chapters and scenes.

  3. Maintain characters, locations and other building blocks of your world as entries.

What you see afterwards: The entries are ready for writing and for the check.

  4. Write in the chapter editor and link passages of text to your entries.

What you see afterwards: The context bar shows you the entry without you leaving the editor.

  5. Let the Illuminatio Engine run its check and decide on the hints. At the end, export your manuscript.

What you see afterwards: You have assessed hints and have a file to pass on.

Who can do this?

Anyone with an account can use Illumentis. What you can do in a project depends on whether you are an owner, a co-author or a guest.

Your data

Your email address is enough for an account. According to the beta notices, Illumentis uses no tracking and no advertising cookies. Every book project has its own data area. What you can set for privacy and data access is described on the account pages.

Limits

Illumentis is currently in the beta phase: features can be incomplete, and the interface can change. The Illuminatio Engine checks by rules and knows only what you have stored in Illumentis. This wiki gives an overview of all features.
